Song 2: Make It Beautiful
Ms. Flowers:
... and since it's just us in here, let me tell you how I really feel.
They just want to take everything apart - all about the math not about the art
cannot calculate matters of the heart - I just want to make it beautiful
Artsy S:
Thinking all the time figuring it out - makes me wanna scream, makes me wanna shout!
Artsy S:
They don’t understand what it’s all about - I just want to make it beautiful
Ms. Flowers:
When we take the time (two students begin working on a painting)
to show the beauty we have inside
you will see what it can be when we try to make it beautiful
Artsy S:
turning something bland into something great - making what the heart can appreciate
Artsy S:
you don’t need to add or to calculate, you just gotta make it beautiful
Choir:
Open up our minds, break out of the box - We can make it shine, open all the locks
Now is the time (creativity rocks!) - We just want to make it beautiful
When we take the time - to show the beauty we have inside
you will see what it can be when we try to make it beautiful
Instrumental Bridge (students do a choreographed dance)
When we take the time - to show the beauty we have inside
you will see what it can be when we try to make it beautiful (painting is finished)
(pause for applause)
Ms. Flowers:
But … and this is a big but …
(everyone giggles whispering, “she said big butt”)
OK, OK, this is an IMPORTANT POINT – We have a contest to enter. And if we’re going to be in it, we might as well win it!
Artsy S:
Yeah, wouldn’t you love to beat the science geeks at their own game?
Artsy S:
Yeah and wipe those smug looks off their faces.
Ms. Flowers:
Smug. Feeling superior. Arrogant. (Sing songy) That’s a STAR WORD! (Ms Flowers: puts a sticker on the student).
Artsy S:
Down with the smug geeks! Up with the Arteests!
All:
Down with the smug geeks! Up with the Arteests!
Ms. Flowers:
Now, now, children. There’s room for everyone on this train. Let’s just do the best job we can… But let’s make sure we do it a little better than Ms. Mason’s students OK? (sing songy) Make it beautiful! Come on people, let’s go see what we’ve got to work with.
(Ms Flowers: leaves followed by all her students. Music comes back in lightly while they go. Then lights and music come down.)
Ms. Mason:
(Lights come back up. Ms. Mason comes in with Stem Students.)
I couldn’t be more impressed with your ideas _________. Your group will have a fantastic project, and so will yours _________.
Stem S:
This is the coolest thing ever. I know we’re going to win that grand prize.
Stem S:
It’s about time somebody made us important. Everybody claps and cheers when people sing a song or something stupid like that – but nobody says anything when the big problems get solved.
Stem S:
Yeah, people roll out the red carpet for actors - just faking doing stuff.
Stem S:
We’re really doing stuff!
All:
(uncoordinated excitement – statements like) Yeah, we’re doing stuff for real!
Stem S:
What if the real stars were the fixers instead of the fakers!
Ms. Mason:
Wow, I like that. Fixers instead of fakers. That has a real ring to it.
