Song 6: That’s When You Rise
Ms. Mason:
The gravity around me - might try to hold me down
the weight of all these problems - might knock me to the ground
whatever comes my way - no failures gonna break me
I ---- am always gonna - try ---- I’m always gonna
get back up, brush myself off - tell myself I’m still alright
Life knocks you down sometimes - that’s when you rise - that’s when you rise
Stem S:
People need solutions when things are going bad
Artsy S:
I made a resolution - to give it all I have
Both:
I’ll say it every day - no failures gonna break me
All:
I ---- am always gonna - try ---- and when I’m down I’ll
get back up, brush myself off - tell myself I’m still alright
Life knocks you down sometimes - that’s when you rise
nobody says it will be easy - I just believe it will be worth it if I will be my best me
Student:
so I ---- am always gonna try ---- and when I’m down I’ll
get back up, brush myself off, tell myself I’m still alright
Life knocks you down sometimes
All:
that’s when you r ----ise, I’m always gonna tr----y, and when I’m down I’ll
get back up, brush myself off, tell myself I’m still alright
Life knocks you down sometimes - that’s when you r ----ise
Ms. Mason:
that’s when you rise
Stem S:
I’m not quitting. I’m going to make something great one day!
Artsy S:
Yeah, even Darth Vader Nader will be impressed
Ms. Mason:
________, respect.
Artsy S:
Sooo rrrry.
Narr: (students express agreement after each quote)
(Narrator character has been looking in the quote bucket. She walks to the middle of the stage to read.)
Hey you guys. Listen to what Mr. Edison said. “Many of life’s failures are people who didn’t realize how close they were to success when they gave up.”
Here’s another one. “Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time.”
Listen to this: “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.”
(Dr. Clark comes in behind everyone, but they don’t see him because they are listening and looking at the narrator character with their backs to him)
Stem S:
Hey, maybe we should do something with these projects!
Artsy S:
That sounds like music to my ears.
Stem S:
But you heard Dr. Nader. He said they’re all junk.
Artsy S:
The word he used was, “garbage”
Narr:
But Mr. Edison said, “Just because something doesn’t do what you planned it to do doesn’t mean it’s worthless.”
And look at this. He also said, “To invent, you need a good imagination and a pile of junk”
Stem S:
That’s it! if we work together, we can make everything we did better!
Dr. Clark:
“There’s a way to do it better. Find it!” That’s Edison too, you know. I heard the bad news. But I see you’ve decided to make lemonade out of these lemons.
Ms. Mason:
These are the most resilient students ever!
Ms. Flowers:
Resilient - to bounce back. That’s a star word. And they have a superstar science teacher.
Dr. Clark:
I gave this project to everyone because I knew sooner or later you would figure it out.
Artsy S:
Figure what out Dr. Clark?
Dr. Clark:
Real problem-solvers recognize that our greatest resource is US – it’s each other. That’s how you make the most of a project. That’s how you make the most of your life. That’s why I do this job - to teach that one critical lesson.
